Steel Decking & Floor Plates: Types, Load Ratings & Specification Guide

Industrial facilities, mezzanine platforms, offshore topsides, and commercial buildings all rely on steel floor systems that provide structural support, anti-slip safety, drainage, and long-term durability. From the checkered floor plates of factory production areas to the welded bar grating of offshore walkways and the metal decking of composite floor systems in high-rise construction, steel floor systems are an essential and often-overlooked component of industrial and commercial infrastructure. Global Steel Industries supplies steel floor plates, grating, and decking products for a comprehensive range of applications.

Checkered plates (also called tread plates or diamond plates) feature a raised pattern of diamonds or lentils on one surface that provides anti-slip traction for foot traffic and vehicle movement. They are produced by hot rolling with a specially engraved roll that imprints the raised pattern. Standard pattern heights are approximately 1.0–2.5mm above the base plate surface. Common materials include mild steel (IS 2062 Grade E250), stainless steel (Grade 304 or 316L for wet or corrosive environments), and aluminium alloys for lighter-weight applications. Mild steel checkered plates are available in thicknesses from 3mm to 12mm and widths up to 2500mm. They are used extensively in industrial walkways, vehicle ramps, stair treads, loading bay floors, and vehicle body panels where anti-slip performance under wet, oily, or dusty conditions is required.
Welded steel bar grating consists of load bars and crossbars resistance-welded or forge-press-welded at intersections, creating an open-grid floor surface that allows drainage, ventilation, and light transmission. Standard load bar sizes range from 25x5mm to 100x10mm, with crossbar spacing of 100mm being most common. The open area is typically 60–75% of the total panel area. Steel grating is the standard flooring for offshore platforms, petrochemical plant walkways, machinery mezzanines, and industrial stair treads where drainage, ventilation, and weight minimization are priorities. Hot-dip galvanized grating provides the corrosion resistance required for outdoor and offshore applications. Stainless steel grating is specified for chemical plant areas, food processing facilities, and other environments where zinc contamination is unacceptable.
Profiled metal decking (permanent steel formwork) is a fundamental component of composite steel-concrete floor systems in commercial and multi-story construction. The trapezoidal or re-entrant profile steel deck serves as both permanent formwork during concrete pouring and as tensile reinforcement in the completed composite slab. Typical deck profiles include 51mm, 75mm, and 100mm deep ribs at various pitch spacings. Metal decking is manufactured from cold-rolled galvanized steel to Grade S280 or S350 specifications. The zinc coating protects the steel from corrosion both during construction and in the completed floor system. Embossed patterns on the deck surface create mechanical interlock with the concrete, developing the composite action that allows the combined deck-concrete system to span between steel beams.
Steel floor systems must be designed to support specific imposed loads — defined in structural design codes including IS 875 (Part 2) for Indian structures, EN 1991-1-1 (Eurocode 1) for European structures, and ASCE 7 for American structures. Typical office floor loads are 3–4 kN/m², while industrial manufacturing areas may impose 10–20 kN/m² or more from heavy machinery. Offshore platform decks and maintenance areas are designed for concentrated loads from equipment and lifting operations. Deflection limits are equally important — excessive deflection under live loads creates unacceptable ponding and serviceability issues. The designer must specify both adequate strength and adequate stiffness. Global Steel Industries’ technical team can assist with floor plate thickness selection, grating load table interpretation, and deck spanning tables for specific design loads.
Steel floor systems are critical to safety, functionality, and structural performance in industrial and commercial environments.
