Stainless Steel Coils: Grades, Finishes & Industrial Applications
Stainless steel coils are among the most versatile raw materials available to manufacturers across dozens of industries. From food processing equipment and pharmaceutical vessels to automotive exhaust systems and architectural facades, the versatility of stainless steel coil is matched by few other materials. Global Steel Industries supplies cold-rolled stainless steel coils in a comprehensive range of grades and finishes to manufacturers, fabricators, and service centers across India and internationally.
Grade 304 (UNS S30400) is the most widely produced austenitic stainless steel globally, accounting for the majority of cold-rolled coil production. With 18% chromium and 8% nickel, it provides good corrosion resistance in atmospheric and mild chemical environments. Its lower-carbon variant, Grade 304L, is preferred for welded applications to avoid sensitization. The food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and general fabrication industries are primary consumers of 304/304L coil.
Grade 316/316L adds 2–3% molybdenum to the 304 chemistry, significantly improving resistance to chloride pitting and crevice corrosion. Marine environments, chemical processing, and pharmaceutical applications where chloride contamination is possible favor 316L coil. Grade 430, a ferritic stainless steel with 17% chromium and no nickel, offers good atmospheric corrosion resistance at reduced cost and is widely used in automotive trim, appliance panels, and decorative applications.
Stainless steel coils are available in a range of surface finishes that dramatically affect appearance, cleanability, and functional performance. The 2B finish — produced by cold rolling followed by annealing and light skin-pass rolling — is the standard industrial finish: smooth, moderately reflective, and easy to clean. It is suitable for most general fabrication, food processing equipment, and chemical vessel applications.
The No.4 brushed finish (also called a satin finish) is produced by polishing the 2B surface with progressively finer abrasive belts. Its unidirectional brushed texture is popular for architectural panels, kitchen equipment, and elevator interiors where aesthetics and easy cleaning are both required. BA (Bright Annealed) finish is a highly reflective mirror-like surface produced by annealing in a controlled atmosphere and is used in decorative and optical applications. Embossed and patterned finishes provide texture and anti-slip properties for floor plates and decorative surfaces.
Stainless steel coils are specified by grade, thickness, width, coil weight, inner diameter, and outer diameter. Standard thicknesses range from 0.3mm to 6mm in cold-rolled form. Width tolerances are typically ±0.5mm for slit coils and ±3mm for mill-edge coils. Thickness tolerances conform to EN 10259 or ASTM A480, with tighter tolerances available for precision applications.
Coil weight typically ranges from 3 tonnes to 20 tonnes, with inner diameters of 508mm or 610mm to suit standard decoiling equipment. Global Steel Industries supplies coils in standard and custom slit widths, allowing manufacturers to minimize material waste and processing steps.
Stainless steel coils for demanding applications require material traceability and conformance certification. EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificates, documenting chemical composition and mechanical properties from the originating mill, are supplied as standard. For food contact and pharmaceutical applications, compliance with relevant regulatory requirements including FDA and EC No. 1935/2004 may be required and can be
documented upon request. Global Steel Industries partners with ISO-certified stainless steel mills whose products conform to ASTM, EN, and JIS standards.
