  • 6061 aluminum alloy is a heat-treatable 6xxx-series alloy primarily containing magnesium and silicon
  • It offers a good combination of strength, corrosion resistance, machinability, weldability, and toughness.

Typical chemical composition includes:

  • Mg: 0.80–1.20%
  • Si: 0.40–0.80%
  • Cu: 0.15–0.40%
  • Cr: 0.04–0.35%
  • Fe: Up to 0.70%
  • Zn: Up to 0.25%
  • Mn: Up to 0.15%
  • 6061-T6 hardness is typically around 95 HB (Brinell), depending on product form and applicable specification
  • 6061-T6 is solution heat-treated and artificially aged for increased strength.
  • 6061-T651 includes additional stress relieving through controlled stretching, making it suitable for applications where machining stability and reduced distortion are important
  • The Mg₂Si phase provides precipitation hardening and contributes to the alloy’s strength.
  • 6061 aluminum has good corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, making it suitable for industrial and outdoor applications
  • It can be easily machined, welded, cut, drilled, milled, and fabricated
  • Aluminum is lightweight, with a density of approximately 2.70 g/cm³, while providing good thermal and electrical conductivity

Common applications include:

  • Automotive and aerospace components
  • Marine equipment
  • CNC-machined parts
  • Structural components
  • Heat exchangers and heat sinks
  • Machinery and engineering parts
  • Frames, supports, and profiles
